Evangelism Online
I’m a big fan of relational evangelism. Coming out of a generation that knocked on doors armed with forced tracts and scary questions, younger people are occasionally peppered with horror stories from their friend’s parents. So in reaction to that older model, I want my ‘evangelism’ to just be a natural extension of the relationship.
‘@JesusChrist’
The idea of ‘evangelism online,’ immediately made me skeptical. How could anyone form a real relationship with Jesus in a digital space. Surely the Great Commission is lived out in relationships where hugs not Facebook pokes, are the signs of friendship. I suppose I might lose some Street Cred, but I didn’t think that Evangelism, online, could function. Which doesn’t seem that big, but since it’s a core function of the church, if evangelism fails online, it’s game over in that space.
Match.com
Then I remembered…Match.com. I read a stat somewhere that said 1 in 8 marriages started online in recent years (can’t find the source though.) Anyway talk about an eye opener! People are finding love, at least with a gravatar, online. Impossible! I’m not going to lie, I find it ludicrous, improbable, definitely inefficient. But since marriage is often such a good picture of the Kingdom of God, if it’s working for marriage, eventually, it should work for evangelism too.
